Malta International Airport (MLA) is located in the town of Gudja, southwest of the Maltese capital Valletta. This is Malta’s only airport, supports all of the Maltese Islands and processes around six million passengers a year.

MLA has over 30 partner carriers, including Aegean, Air Malta, Alitalia, British Airways, EasyJet, Emirates, Lufthansa, Norwegian, Qatar Airlines, Ryanair and Turkish Airlines, and it connects Malta to a plethora of exciting locations, including direct flights to Algiers, Brussels, Prague, Helsinki, Paris, Copenhagen, Berlin, Dublin and many UK cities, including London, Glasgow, Manchester and many more.

The airport received a commendation in the most recent World Routes Award, taking second place in the category for airports processing between 4 and 20 million passengers per annum. It has made a concerted effort to improve its service in recent years by extending seasonal routes to all year round, but it’s also got an eye on environmental sustainability and has launched an initiative to encourage partner carriers to use quieter and more energy-efficient engines.

MLA has over 1500 car parking spaces, 27 retail outlets, 12 catering establishments, supports 3800 jobs and contributes 9.2% of Malta’s GDP.

This strategically placed island is simply packed with history and culture, but it’s also a picturesque place to chill out and relax or party, depending on your tastes and the purpose of your visit. For example, St John’s Co-Cathedral has an impressive interior peppered with gold and marble, and it’s the Knights of Malta’s main church. Meanwhile, the Valetta fortifications are wonderful to walk along, and the island’s first citadel capital Mdina is a historical treasure trove which was the Roman centre of Malta, has been fortified since the Bronze Age, is a delight to wander through and hosts many exceptional restaurants.

Once you pick up your car in MLA (always drive on the left in Malta, the same as in the UK) you’ll be in Valetta in under 20 minutes and the rest of the island’s attractions are within easy reach. There are plenty of excellent vehicles to choose from our airport rental partners and the perfect choice will depend on the needs of you and your group and your plans for your holiday. For instance, a compact Fiat Punto is ideal for scooting around town and squeezing into tight parking spaces, a DS 3 convertible is the perfect choice for chilling out in the open air as you cruise around the coast, and the roomy Ford Tourneo seats 9 in air-conditioned comfort, so it’s a top pick for a large group of holidaymakers.

Since customer satisfaction is always our ultimate priority, we only work with car rental partners who are highly rated and recommended, so at MLA you can feel confident renting a vehicle through Enjoy Travel with the likes of Europcar, Green Motion Car and Van Rental, Hertz, SurPrice Car Rentals, CB Rentals Malta and OptimoRent.

Ordering your car for pickup at Malta International is easy simply pop your dates and details into our search facility, hit the button and you’ll have a choice of cracking car hire deals in the blink of an eye.

Driving in and around Malta International Airport (MLA)

You won’t have too many problems driving around Malta relatively freely, but like any location, it sometimes suffers from traffic jams, roadworks and diversions, so to keep up to date and plan your road trips efficiently each day, download the Maltese Traffic app for real time traffic updates across the island and live cams that allow you to check hotspots from your phone.

The Speed limits are 80 km/h on open roads and 50 km/h in built up areas unless any local road signs indicate a lower limit.

In some ways, driving in Malta follows similar rules and conventions to the UK, but there are some variations here are a few tips:

  • The government body Transport Malta manages a number of public car parks in Malta and the neighbouring island of Gozo. They’re free of charge but it’s acceptable to offer tips to the attendants on duty if you wish.
  • Elsewhere, parking bays are painted in certain colours to indicate how they should be used. White paint indicates that anyone can use the parking bay, yellow means don’t park, green means permanently reserved for residents and blue means reserved for residents between 7pm and 7am.
  • There are no motorways in Malta ̶- the main roads are usually dual carriageways.
  • Main roads are usually in good condition, but once you’re traversing village roads and B roads, potholes are common, so be prepared for a bumpy ride and drive cautiously if you want to avoid catching a flat tyre.
  • Traffic is monitored by the police and official wardens (watch out for their dark green uniforms) and they’re especially vigilant regarding issues such as speeding, using your mobile phone while driving and illegal parking. However, the most serious issue for authorities is probably drink driving ̶ as you’d expect, they take a dim view of anyone who gets behind the wheel under the influence of alcohol and police sometimes erect roadblocks and breathalyse cars they stop. The drink drive limit is 80mg in 100ml of blood, which is the same as in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
  • There are around 10 speed cameras in the main island of Malta, so coverage isn’t as comprehensive as in larger nations, but you should watch your speed carefully nonetheless.
  • Drivers, passengers and children are required to use seatbelts and/or car seats or similar age- and size-appropriate restraints.
  • Drivers in Malta are required to indicate, but unfortunately many don’t put this into practice on the road, so don’t be surprised if a vehicle in your vicinity turns without warning and always drive defensively in order to protect yourself.
  • There are several petrol stations dotted across the island, so you shouldn’t ever run out of fuel. During the day, pump attendants are usually in place and they’ll fuel up for you, but at other times, many stations have 24-hour automated pumps, so you’ll never be stuck.
  • You can drive in Malta with a valid UK license and licenses from most other nations are recognised too but you should check with your car hire provider to confirm as early as possible.
  • Don’t use your car horn in built-up residential areas in Malta between 11pm and 6am.
  • If you’re staying outside the capital and you want to explore Valetta on foot, leave your car at the park and ride facility and hop on a shuttle bus into town. This is sometimes the most convenient way of exploring the area.

A useful guide to Malta International Airport (MLA) car rental customers

If you’re a fan of history and culture, you could have your work cut out exploring everything that Malta has to offer, but it’s also a great place to unwind all the way, enjoy good food and fine wine and recharge your batteries. Here are a few highlights you shouldn’t miss:

  • The Lascaris War Rooms were once Malta’s best-kept secret and if you’re interested in military history and geopolitics, you’ll be in your element here. This fully equipped underground bunker was first opened in 1940 to house the headquarters of the combined military services during WWII, but the complex was then used by NATO during the Cold War era to track Soviet submarines up until 1977. Located 150 feet below the Upper Barracca Gardens in Valetta, a tour of this top-secret bunker is a rare treat indeed!
  • Mdina and Rabat are other must-see tourist attractions in Malta and they really showcase the island’s inspirational history. The history of Mdina stretches back 4000 years and according to local legend, the apostle Paul lived there after being shipwrecked in 60AD, so you can still visit St Paul’s Grotto in Rabat to this day. The atmospheric city of Mdina is lamplit by night and it’s still home to many of Malta’s most renowned families (and the palaces they reside in!). There are endless nooks and crannies to explore in this unique walled city and strolling through it you’re transported back centuries as you turn every corner.

And voila! umpteen reasons you should visit Malta on your next European holiday and hire a reliable car to enjoy the freedom of the road in this sublime and scenic part of the world.

You can arrange your MLA car in a couple of minutes with Enjoy Car Hire and it’ll be waiting for you when you land, so there’s no time wasted waiting to make the most of Malta magnificent!
