Driving in and around London Heathrow Airport

Driving from Heathrow Airport to central London is relatively simple – first, follow Faggs Road to Great South-West Road/A30, then take the Parkway/A312, M4 and A4 to Constitution Hill in London, the follow Constitution Hill and the Mall to your city centre accommodation.

If your Heathrow Airport hire car has a SatNav and you’re in the city for the first time, use it to reassure yourself, but since it might not factor in the latest diversions or roadworks, tune into LBC Radio for the latest traffic updates and give yourself plenty of time as the roads can be congested during rush hour.

In central London, there’s a recently introduced speed limit of 32 km/h in many areas, but otherwise the limit is 48 km/h in built-up areas, 96 km/h on single carriageways, 112 km/h on dual carriageways and 112 km/h on motorways.

Be aware that you might have to pay the congestion charge fee before driving into the Central London Zone, which covers Marylebone to Shoreditch and all the way down to Elephant & Castle and Victoria. The charging time is from Monday-Friday between 7am and 6pm, but there’s no charge on weekends. To find out whether you’ll need to pay, enter your hire vehicle details on the Transport For London site.

Furthermore, don’t forget that if you travel into London from the M6 toll road or via the Dartford Tunnel on the M25 you’ll have to pay a fee. Also beware of yellow box junctions – be patient while you’re waiting at a junction and don’t pull out until the coast is clear, because if you find yourself stuck in the yellow box and you’re blocking the path of other vehicles, it can be dangerous and you could be served with a Penalty Charge Notice (PCN) which can cost up to £130.

Bus lanes in London are indicated by blue signs and operate at different times of day – if you end up in a bus lane when it’s operational, this is another faux pas which can incur a PCN, as can stopping in red routes, which are indicated by a blue circular sign with a red cross cutting through it or double red lines.

Parking in London can be slightly tricky, but you’ll soon get the hang of it – you can’t park on double yellow lines or on the pavement, but if you find a signposted ‘pay and display’ area, you’re fine to park once you’ve paid your fee. Please remember to clearly display your ticket inside your car though – if a traffic warden can’t easily see it, you’ll be issued with a ticket and required to part with cash for a fine, regardless of the fact you’ve actually acted in good faith.

As well as buses, you might see more cyclists on roads than you’re used to, but simply give them the same amount of space you would do for a car and you can share the road safely. The best advice for driving in London is to stay calm, observe the speed limit and study the most common traffic signs beforehand if you’re unfamiliar with them.

Fans of engineering will probably appreciate a trip to South Foreland Lighthouse, where self-taught scientist Michael Faraday carried out ground-breaking experiments into the use of electricity in lighthouses, and St Margaret’s Museum offers even more insights into the fascinating history of this locality. Furthermore, if you fancy swapping roads for rails for a short while, hop on board the East Kent Railway, a superb steam train that chugs its way through awe-inspring countryside in elegant traditional style.
