Off to Bonnie Dundee for a super Scottish holiday or business trip? If you haven’t been before, this buzzing metropolis in the historic county of Angus in Scotland’s northeast is a real eye-opener. A UNESCO city of design, Dundee has hit the headlines in recent years thanks to the stunning V&A Dundee design museum – sitting like an errant spaceship on the banks of the River Tay, the Kengo Kuma-designed masterpiece is currently the city’s crowning glory. There’s lots of exciting urban renewal around this waterfront area too, with trendy bars, hotels, offices, apartments and water sports venues springing up in this scenic spot between the Tay road and rail bridges and the nearby city centre. The epicentre of the city is just a short walk away and boasts a good mix of cafes, restaurants and shops to suit all budgets, and you can drive up to the city’s highest point, Dundee Law, to take in the panoramic city scape and views that stretch over the Tay to Fife in the south. Hop in your car again and sublime seaside resort Broughty Ferry is just 10 minutes further along the river, St Andrews (the home of golf) just on the other side of the bridge and windswept Aberdeen is a little further north. A university city with a lovely mix of cultures, Dundee is an up and coming location which is emerging from the shadows of its larger rivals Edinburgh and Glasgow to claim its own distinctive place as Scotland’s coolest city. Hire a car here and it’s a brilliant base for exploring Scotland’s east coast and beyond.

There’s a wide choice of car hire here so you won’t have a problem finding the right vehicle to fit your needs and budget. For instance, it costs around £12 a day to hire an economy-sized car in Dundee, a rugged SUV like a Vauxhall Crossland is £22 a day and a 7-seater like the Citroen Grand Picasso is around £50 a day. Book early for the best price and get ready to roll in the city so entertaining that it’s nicknamed Fundee!

Guide to Dundee

With plenty to see and do, Dundee stirs the mind, body and soul. Here’s a quick guide to this stylish city by the banks of the silvery Tay.

City of Design

While the V&A is Dundee’s design hub these days, the city has been a UNESCO City of Design since 2014 and it’s the only city in the UK to have earned this accolade. The award recognises the city’s contributions to medical research, video games (it gave the world Grand Theft Auto) and comic books (local publishers D.C. Thomson brought characters like Dennis the Menace, Desperate Dan and Oor Wullie to the world in titles The Beano and The Dandy). Walking around the city, you’ll see statues honouring these evergreen childhood heroes, churches and commercial buildings in various architectural styles, and trendy stores and boutiques around the Boho Exchange Street.

Historical highlights

After being granted privileges by King William the Lion in 1191, Dundee was elevated to Royal Burgh status, which confers extensive market and trading rights. It soon became a popular trading post for goods from more rural areas of Angus, with goods imported from other European nations via its port further bolstering its fortunes. Much later, it became famous for ‘the three j’s’ (jute, jam and journalism), industries which, helped it industrialise and flourish during the 19th century. Shipbuilding is another former powerhouse industry and the iconic RRS Discovery, which took Captain Robert Falcon Scott and his crew to the Antarctic, was built here and can still be seen at the riverside.

Cool culture

There’s lots going on culturally in Dundee, with a superb mix of the traditional and modern. For instance, the Caird Hall hosts everything from live music gigs featuring smash hit bands and there are exciting new upcoming additions to the waterfront like the Eden Project. Plus, you can catch live theatrical productions at Dundee Rep or live football from the city’s two teams, Dundee United and Dundee FC, whose stadiums are famously situated just yards from each other. However, the best thing about Dundee’s culture is its people. Dundonians are a friendly, sociable and welcoming bunch, with a distinctive accent and dialect – they welcome every visitor with open arms and hearts.

Things to do in Dundee

Eclectic nights out

A night out in Dundee is always memorable because the city’s night time economy is just so diverse. There are traditional pubs like the ornate Trades Bar, student favourites like Artbar, trendy speakeasy-type secret bars like Draffens, retro clubs like Club Tropicana and underground club nights featuring genres from hip-hop to drum n bass (and everything in between) in various venues around the city. At the end of your evening, you can satisfy your hunger pangs with a famous Dundee pie (pronounced ‘peh’) or scooby snack from Clark’s 24 Hour Bakery at Annfield Row – delish!

Riverside delights

We’ve already covered V&A Dundee and Captain Scott’s discovery boat, but the riverside attractions don’t end there. At Wild Shore Dundee at Victoria Dock, you can waterski, paddleboarding or the aqua assault course, and visit HMS Unicorn, which at 200 years old is one of the world’s oldest vessels. Alternatively, take a quick drive along to Broughty Ferry if you want to see the neighbouring town’s lovely castle and golden sands, or treat yourself to a jaw-droppingly tasty ice cream at Visocchi’s.

Superb shopping

You’ll have a rare time indulging in a bit of retail therapy in Dundee too and there’s something to float everyone’s boat. Walking into tea and coffee merchant J A Braithwaite is like stepping back in time and they’re well stocked with even the rarest beans, like Jamaica Blue Mountain. If you like US street and skate fashions, you’ll love Arkive, gift shops Quirky Coo and Little Thistle sell local crafts with a unique Scottish slant, and you’ll find all of your favourite high street stores in the Wellgate and Overgate shopping centres.

Eating out in Dundee

Fine dining

Yearning for fresh seafood? Head straight to The Ship Inn at Broughty Ferry for ocean fare washed down with delectable wines, Brasserie Ecosse in the city proper serves Scottish classics with a twist, and Castlehill Restaurant in Exchange Street is an elegant Michelin-starred eatery with a la carte and five course tasting menus.

International options

If Italian is your bag, Piccolo on Perth Road serves sumptuous dishes in an intimate setting, with friendly staff and a laid-back atmosphere, the tapas at Sol y Sombra are sensational, and Rancho Pancho serves legendary tacos with ice cold beer. Alternatively, if nothing tempts those taste buds like Asian cuisine, don’t miss the delicate flavours and opulent surroundings of Rama Thai.

Fast and friendly

When you want a quick yet quality bite, Dundee doesn’t disappoint. There’s a Five Guys burger outlet serving those signature succulent patties, Nando’s, McDonald’s, Burger King, and more. Pub grub is available in most of the city’s many bars, the Pancake Place is uncommonly good and German Doner Kebab is a rare treat.

Transport in Dundee

Airports

There’s a small airport in Dundee (DND) which serves destinations like Belfast and London, but Edinburgh Airport (EDI) is an hour or so away and, as Scotland’s busiest air hub, connects the nation to the world. If picking up your hire car at the airport is convenient, this is easily arranged right here at Enjoy Travel.

Public transport

You can make your way across Dundee and its neighbouring towns and village using the city’s extensive bus network – pay by card on the bus or have the exact change. Meanwhile, the city’s recently refurbished railway station is well connected to locations across the UK.

Driving

Hiring a car is the most convenient way to navigate Dundee for most travellers and it’s a reasonably easy city to drive around. Once you drive out into rural areas, please be aware of large wildlife like deer, as well as farm animals. You can reach Edinburgh in around one hour and a half, Aberdeen is closer, and Glasgow is also a manageable drive. Speed limits are 20mph in residential areas, 30mph in built-up areas, 60mph on open roads and 70mph on motorways. Given the wild terrain in some of the more unspoiled parts of Scotland, the commanding riving position and robust traction of four-wheel drives makes them a popular choice.
